The rail connection comprises of two links, namely a link between Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg and a link between Johannesburg International Airport and Sandton. Apart from the three anchor stations on these two links, seven other stations will be linked by approximately 80 kilometres of rail along the proposed route. The three anchor stations will be located at: Johannesburg International Airport Tshwane and Johannesburg The seven other stations will be located at: Rosebank Sandton Marlboro Midrand Centurion Hatfield and Rhodesfield (Kempton Park) This modern train will offer international standards of public transport with high levels of safety, reliability, predictability and comfort. Travelling at maximum speeds of 160 to 180 kilometres per hour it will reach Tshwane from Johannesburg in less than 40 minutes. The minimum frequency between Johannesburg and Tshwane will initially be six trains per hour per direction and it will operate approximately 18 hours per day. This public transport service will include dedicated, exclusive bus services to transport passengers to and from stations. The Gautrain rail system has two major corridors: South-North and West-East. Rosebank Station is located on the north-south main spine and will be served by the commuter service between Park Station in Johannesburg CBD and Hatfield Station east of the Pretoria CBD.   Hatfield Station Locality The Gautrain Hatfield Station is located within the Hatfield Business Node east of the Pretoria Central Business District adjacent to the existing railway line between the Rissik and Hartebeesspruit Stations. The Hatfield Station precinct is bounded by School Lane in the north, Duncan Street in the east, the existing railway line in the south and Grosvenor Street in the west. The station area will be occupied by a multi-storey parking garage for park-and-ride passengers, drop-off and short-term parking to serve the so-called kiss-and-ride passengers, facilities for bicycles and loading bays for the feeder-and-distribution vehicles that will serve the Hatfield Station to ensure that Gautrain passengers have access to public transport from their origins and to their destinations within the catchment area of the Hatfield Station. Although the railway line and platforms will be below natural ground level to allow the future extension of the Gautrain network towards the east underneath Duncan Street, the platforms will be conveniently accessible by stairs and escalators from ground level and by lifts to accommodate physically impaired passengers. The station building can be extended across the existing railway line to promote the integration of the Gautrain with the surrounding business area and to specifically promote a pedestrian-friendly environment. Hatfield Station is the last station on the primary north-south axis of the Gautrain system between the Johannesburg Park Station and Hatfield Station. Two further stations have been provided in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, namely the Centurion Station at the Centurion Lake and Pretoria Station adjacent to the historic Pretoria Main Station. Rail Services Available from Hatfield Station   Passengers can board the Gautrain at Hatfield to all stations on the north-south service, i.e. Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Marlboro, Sandton, Rosebank and Johannesburg Park Station. Passengers to the Ekurhuleni area should transfer at Marlboro Station to the east-west commuter service to the Rhodesfield Station in Kempton Park while passengers to the Johannesburg International Airport must transfer at Sandton to the non-stop airport service to the Johannesburg International Airport Station which is located in the terminal building on the airport. Estimated patronage figures indicate a high level of travel between the Hatfield Station and Pretoria Station in the Central Business District. The Gautrain is therefore expected to play an important role in the public transport system of the City of Tshwane.   Vision of the Hatfield Station The Hatfield Station precinct will be fully integrated with the surrounding business and residential developments. An important component of the conceptual planning of the station area is safe, efficient and pleasant pedestrian linkages to a pedestrian axis that runs along the existing railway line from Duncan Street and the Hartebeestspruit Station in the east to Rissik Station and the Hatfield Galleries Centre in the west. The extension of Grosvenor Street across the railway line, that will be implemented as part of the Gautrain project, will contribute significantly to more convenient and efficient traffic and pedestrian circulation in the Hatfield area.Pretoria Main Station. Access to Hatfield Station   It is anticipated that Gautrain passengers will make use of walking, cycling, private vehicles as well as the feeder-and-distribution services that form part of the Gautrain system. Also incorporated are the existing commuter rail service provided by Metrorail and the existing public transport services on the road network surrounding the station precinct. Ample parking will be available on the station site for park-and-ride passengers and provision has been made for a long-term demand of 3000 parking bays. The capacity of critical street sections and intersections along roads that will serve the Hatfield Station will be upgraded to accommodate the traffic demand on the street network. Provision is also made for drop-off areas and short-term parking for passengers that are dropped-off and picked-up at the station by private transport. Gautrain Hatfield Station's feeder-and-distribution services will provide a convenient service to the station from surrounding residential areas and for example the Brooklyn shopping node. The feeder-and-distribution service will be integrated with the Gautrain rail service to provide a seamless public transport service to the catchment area of the Hatfield Station. A critical element of the Gautrain Station at Hatfield is the connection to the existing Hartebeestspruit railway station where passengers will be able to transfer from the Metrorail commuter rail service to the Gautrain. The existing Metrorail rail service provides a feeder service to a wide area throughout the City of Tshwane Metropolitan area and makes the Gautrain service accessible to a large component of the community that relies on public transport. Passengers that will in future make use of the planned Tshwane Ring Rail service will also be able to transfer to the Gautrain from the Hartebeestspruit Station at the Hatfield Station.   Attractions in the Hatfield Station Area Hatfield was selected as a Gautrain Station position for a number of reasons, including its accessibility from the N1 and N4 freeways, major arterial roads and the vibrantly growing Hatfield node. Several established developments, planned initiatives, as well as other activities and services contribute to the need for the Hatfield Station, including the following important places: The Blue IQ Innovation Hub Strategic Development Initiative between the CSIR and University of Pretoria that is currently under construction on a portion of the experimental farm of the University of Pretoria The campus and sports grounds of the University of Pretoria. The Gautrain will provide an alternative means of travel for students, academic staff, other employees and visitors, and can contribute to address the critical parking shortage in the area surrounding the University Securicor Loftus Stadium where important rugby and soccer games are played and that has been included in the list of stadiums earmarked for the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament Diplomatic missions and Embassies The Hatfield retail and office node A range of academic institutions that include Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Afrikaans Meisies Hoër, Boys’ High School and Pretoria High School for Girls as well as private schools and colleges in the Hatfield node.
